From Calera to Puerto Montt the track, extending 1,729
kilometers including transversal branch lines, provides
us with access to the principal production and consumption
centers and the main ports of the country.
Fepasa is the most diversified freight
railroad of Chile, moving an extensive and balanced
mix of products that include: cellulose, copper, corn,
wheat, soy, raise, containers, steel, pulp lumber,
cement, wood chips, mineral bulk, chemicals, fuel,
coal, sawn wood, sugar, sugar beet, OSB wood, frozen
salmon, salmon feed, and more recently, 50% of the
waste that Santiago produces.
Our fleet is made up of 89 locomotives
and more than 3000 cars adapted to different purposes.
One of our permanent objectives is to improve and
modernize our cars on a continious basis, in order
to respond to the changing needs of the market.
 Our
History
The history of the railroad in Chile dates back to
1851, when private railroad companies began transporting
copper and saltpeter in the north, later extending
their services to the coal mining industry in the
south. At the end of the XIX century the State of
Chile began the process of nationalizing the railroads
and then extending the network to improve freight
and passenger services. This expansion continued until
the 70s after which investments were reduced resulting
in the progressive deterioration of the railroad.
In the 90s the government decided
to privatize part of the network in order to revitalized
the railroad. As a consequence, Ferrocarril del Pacífico
S.A. (Fepasa) was created on September 15, 1993, to
take over the freight services offered by the state
railroad. In 1994, EFE (the Chilean state railroad
company) sold 51% of Fepasa to the private sector
through a public bid. Puerto Ventanas S.A. later took
the control of Fepasa through a Public Offering in
2003.
Since 1995, Fepasa has expanded its
operations by investing in the rehabilitation of its
rolling stock, the purchase of rebuilt locomotives,
and by placing greater emphasis on improving customer
service. As a result, Fepasa has increased its incomes
and transport in the last six years.
